Curatorial analysis

The solid, luminous flank of the horse dominates the space as if concentrating all the room's light. Amidst a dense and earthy gloom, the white horse not only catches the beam descending from above, but seems to radiate an internal, milky, and sculptural brilliance. Its mass, resolute from its hindquarters to the calm contour of its head, imposes a physical monumentality that immediately challenges the intimate scale of the wooden support.

Confronted with this animal presence, the scene adopts a quiet yet tense narrative weight. A man seen from behind strokes or examines the flank in an almost intimate gesture, placing the viewer directly behind his shoulder. On the opposite side, three figures veiled in shadow observe the inspection: among them stands an official in uniform with a tricorn hat and another holding a folded document. This counterpoint between the slow touch on the beast's coat and the coldness of bureaucratic paper sparks various conjectures about the event, whether a formal sale, a veterinary review, or the official requisition of an exceptional steed.

The combined use of oil and enamel over wood lends the shadows a veiled, atmospheric quality, in which faces and walls are barely discerned amid muted earth tones and ochres. In contrast, the medium turns denser and more satin-like across the animal's anatomy, modeling every tendon and fold with precise tonal gradations. Gómez constructs a dialogue here between the radiant carnality of the steed and the gravity of a human rite deliberately held back in shadow.
