Curatorial analysis

The fiercely tight framing dispenses with any spatial context to thrust the gaze directly against the intimate architecture of the face. José Manuel Gómez foregoes the comfort of stable anatomical proportions, opting instead for an almost suffocating frontality where two dark circles, the sturdy rims of a pair of spectacles, organize the entire visual field. Behind them lies no docile pupil, but a vortex of reflections and distortions where the eye seems to multiply, dissolve, and observe simultaneously.

Upon the paper, the mixed media functions like an archaeological record of frictions. Charcoal and black pigment do not merely delineate; they scratch, stain, and frame the surface with an abrasive pulse that contrasts with the luminous fragility of chalky whites and washed-out grays. These chromatic tensions become even sharper through intrusions of earthy ochre and amber flashes across the brow and nasal bridge, tempered by subtle flushes of ashen pink. Gómez applies matter through both accumulation and subtraction, allowing the dragging of the tool to reveal underlying layers, as though physiognomy were the result of a thought constantly remaking itself.

The asymmetry of the face destabilizes any calm. While the right lens sinks into dense shadows and nearly opaque fractures, the left concentrates a turbid, dilated luminosity that projects an inquisitive sharpness outward toward the viewer. The figure appears caught in a reflective trance or on the verge of a restrained confession. Within merely nineteen by thirty centimeters, the small physical scale inverts into an overwhelming psychological monumentality. We are not facing the mere transcription of facial features, but rather a raw exploration of vision: the lenses do not correct sight, they turn it into a dense filter, a threshold where interiority and exteriority relentlessly collide.
