Curatorial analysis

Four bulging gazes carry the weight of the print, fixed and motionless, returning to the viewer the very scrutiny to which they are subjected. The horizontal surface functions as a tightly packed wall of physiognomies where neither air nor distance exists; each head overlaps the adjacent one in an almost claustrophobic compression. Angular faces, defined by sharp gouge cuts, coexist in an overlap of planes that dismantle traditional perspective in favor of a frontal, syncopated, rhythmic cadence.

The title declares this specular dynamic: observing and being observed cease to be separate acts, merging into a single optical tension. The eyes, carved with raw white pupils and rings against dark grounds or vice versa, serve as focal magnets guiding the visual trajectory from left to right. Comb-like moustaches, teeth bared like geometric grates, and faceted noses transform these men into almost totemic archetypes, where individuality yields to a silent, watchful collective.

The materiality of the woodblock plays a decisive role in the print's atmosphere. Rather than concealing the matrix, the ink lets the wooden grain filter through the silvery grays, contributing an organic vibration that contrasts with the solidity of the black and the density of the burgundy. That deep wine hue, applied to strategic zones such as sharp shadows, beards, and cheekbones, imbues the scene with a somber, nocturnal warmth.

This gathering of dense brows and disproportionate eyes raises a disquieting question about the nature of the witness. Anyone facing the print becomes caught within its visual field, transformed from a passive beholder into a subject under scrutiny by a mute, unblinking jury.
