Curatorial analysis

A face emerges and dissolves at the same time, dragged to the right by a flurry of horizontal sweeps that dismantle the solidity of the skull. The head, tilted downward in a gesture of introspection or dejection, does not rest on an identifiable body, but barely on the schematic indication of a neck and collar drawn with dry, rapid lines. Toward the right of the paper, emptiness expands like an absolute silence: more than half of the sheet remains untouched, leaving the figure to carry the gravitational weight of the frame alone.

The fundamental contrast lies not only in the collision between carbon black and the white ground, but in the internal struggle between the stillness of drawing and its graphic dissolution. The ear and the bridge of the nose retain the fidelity of close observation, while the forehead, temple, and crown burst into an almost electric static. Across this mass of dark, clenched strokes, small circular reserves survive, spheres of light that puncture the black pigment like bubbles or spots of vision blinded by proximity.

That downward gaze, with its fixed pupil and shadowed eyelid, avoids direct confrontation with the viewer. By stripping the self-portrait of narrative and setting, the print focuses entirely on the physical experience of a mind turning inward. The lines escaping toward the margins function as interference, suggesting thoughts that scatter or an identity unable to settle within a fixed outline. The lithograph thus captures a fleeting moment where the individual seems to disintegrate in the very act of self-scrutiny.
