Curatorial analysis

The gouged groove commands the wood. In this solid timber plank with an arched top, José Luis Sojo makes no attempt to disguise the physical weight of the block or its tree-trunk origins; on the contrary, the organic medium dictates the strict verticality that governs the entire figure. A dense network of parallel incisions runs down the hair and beard like an unbroken stream, turning the surface into a field of tactile vibration where the chisel leaves a rhythmic, firm, and patient trace.

Amidst this curtain of lines descending to the base, the features emerge through an almost hieratic geometric reduction. The planar forehead and heavy, closed eyelids, carved as two clean, concave recesses, cast a contained shadow that withholds the gaze to direct it inward. Above them, the crown of thorns interrupts the downward flow with small, angular interlacing, marking the sole tense horizontal in a composition that shuns superfluous ornament. The straight, sharp nose functions as an unyielding axis of symmetry leading to a mouth slightly agape over a dark cavity, suggesting the weight of a held sigh or a final surrender.

By eschewing all polychromy, the sculpture entrusts its eloquence to the warm tone of the wood grain and the behavior of raking light across the sharp ridges. There is neither theatrical drama nor baroque contortion; volume is compressed within a relief scarcely five centimeters deep, utilizing the chiaroscuro of the carved furrows to model grief and serenity simultaneously. The piece, conversing with the iconography of martyrdom yet stripped of devotional artifice, stands as a totem of introspection where the silence of the timber merges seamlessly with the quietude of the subject.
