Curatorial analysis

A face emerges halfway from a stony matrix that refuses to let it go entirely. At its edges, the molejón stone retains the violent fractures of the quarry, with jagged ridges and exposed strata that flank the head like a dense mane or fossilized wings. In the center, however, the tool has given way to a rounded, silky, almost organic finish, where the volumes of the cheekbones and chin curve with a softness that defies the original hardness of the block.

This dialogue between the unformed and the modeled governs the entire sculptural tension. The head does not rise upon a neck nor does it demand traditional verticality; it rests upon its base with the natural weight of sediment, angling the face upward in a gesture of gentle abandonment. The eyes remain closed behind two subtle incisions that mark the eyelids without breaking the continuous plane of the sockets, while the fleshy lips, gently thrust forward, concentrate the highest tactile density of the piece. There is a contained breath in that mouth that lends warmth to the coolness of the rock.

Raking light reveals the microscopic grain of the molejón, creating delicate gradations of shadow across the cheeks and sharp contrasts along the fractured flanks. This interplay transforms the sculpture's modest scale into a commanding presence, where the human figure seems suspended in a liminal state, caught between deep sleep and the slow revelation of its own form. It operates not merely as a portrait, but as a tactile meditation on waking matter and the stone that still holds it.
