Curatorial analysis

Marcela's gaze fixes the viewer with an unsettling magnetism. In this face there is none of the conventional placidity of child portraiture; the head is fractured by sharp planes of light and shadow, where a meticulous cross-hatching veils half the forehead while the remaining features are defined through vigorous, almost topographical incisions. The oversized eyes, framed by concentric contours, harbor a psychological tension that instantly destabilizes the apparent innocence of the scene.

The figure's body retains the canonical markers of childhood (the central bow cinched at the waist, the scalloped hems of the sleeves, the rounded collar, and the small flower perched in her hair), yet the gouge transforms them into a graphic armature of parallel, fluted striations. The torso vibrates with a dense vertical rhythm that seems to extend downward into the skirt, contrasting with the opaque fullness of the solid black sleeves. This play of solids and voids produces a rigid, almost totemic corporality, where textile ornament turns into pure optical vibration.

Behind the figure, the space breaks down into orthogonal structures that alternate checkerboard patterns, vertical striping, and modules resembling ladders or urban facades. The background's architecture cancels any notion of atmospheric depth, thrusting the girl into the foreground against a wall of geometric signs. Dense and saturated across the paper, the black ink establishes a severe dialogue with the cleared areas, where light does not gently bathe forms but erupts through direct material subtraction. Between the metric rigidity of the surroundings and the expressionistic fracturing of the facial features, the print suspends the figure in a strange threshold, halfway between the nostalgia of a family memory and the eerie alertness of a waking dream.
