Curatorial analysis

A dense, sculptural body yields to gravity on a suspended surface that defies the stillness of its setting. In this intimate-scale print, Magda Santo Anastassio articulates a scene where bodily rest coexists with rigorous graphic compartmentalization, built from a rich variety of incised textures.

The nude body dominates the horizontal axis with an almost telluric presence. Modeled through tightly woven crosshatching that accentuates its volume and weight, it contrasts sharply with the delicacy of the surface beneath it, an apron brimming with floral filigrees, stippling, and textile transparencies. At the outer edges, two vertical backdrops patterned in checkerboards frame the composition and compress the space, while a floor in chequered perspective creates an illusory recession that collides with the flatness of the decorative planes.

Above, the moon manifests as a dark, dense orb suspended in a sky barely suggested by subtle, horizontal lines. This black celestial body inverts traditional light logic: rather than casting radiance, it seems to absorb atmospheric energy, imbuing the scene with a dreamlike, hermetic aura. The figure's head, tilted upward with hair trailing backwards, reinforces this silent communion with the night.

Visual tension is sustained through a continuous dialogue between rigid geometry and organic sinuosity. Each area of the plate explores a distinct ink density, alternating deep blacks with crisp whites that preserve the paper's grain. Santo Anastassio turns an apparent moment of rest into a magnetically charged space, where the female figure reposes not in passivity, but with a profound gravitational weight within her own nocturnal universe.
