Curatorial analysis

A severe gaze holds steady behind the frame of the eyeglasses, yet what immediately destabilizes the portrait is the overwhelming weight of the cap. The dark mass of the headwear expands toward the viewer's right with an almost sculptural volume, striated by parallel sweeps that seem to scrape the medium before fixing it to the paper. Beneath this structure, the face is split into two graphic logics: while the left side sinks into a dense, carbon mass that devours the cheek and eye socket, the right side breathes through a clean, subtle, and stripped-down linear contour.

This collision between rubbed glazes and analytical line work defines the internal tension of the drawing. José Manuel Gómez does not model the face with gentle gradations, but rather through friction: the deepest shadow falls squarely across the bridge of the nose, creating a sharp relief that projects the gaze toward the viewer with an unsettling directness. The glasses are not a mere accessory here, but an optical device that fragments anatomy; their transparent rims duplicate the eye contours and fracture the continuity of the brows, accentuating an unrelenting scrutiny, both from the sitter outward and from the artist toward the subject.

Toward the edges, the figure refuses conventional closure. The neck and shoulders are merely hinted at through lines that hesitate and dissolve into the grayish atmosphere of the background, a haze of swept charcoal that seems to absorb the physical body, leaving only the psychological gravity of the head standing. Stripped of color and any surrounding narrative detail, this work concentrates all its power within the resistance of the stroke, confirming the paper's surface as a taut skin upon which thought and matter contest the permanence of a gesture.
