Curatorial analysis

A violent, suspended torsion dominates the scene at the exact moment the horse coils around its own axis, caught in an act of untamed resistance. The drawing avoids the static serenity of traditional equestrian portraiture to immerse itself entirely in muscular drive at its peak of tension. Through a dense, dark stroke, the pronounced curve of the neck and the folded bend of the forelegs articulate a downward diagonal that defies any notion of rest, while the hindquarters absorb the momentum of a contained force that seems on the verge of overflowing the physical edges of the paper.

Charcoal operates on this plane with unmistakable tactile urgency. José Manuel Gómez dispenses with any superfluous environmental detail to concentrate on pure anatomical architecture, built through thick, almost sculptural lines that coexist with subtle glazes, rubbings, and smudges. The medium becomes an energetic flurry in the ruffled mane and arched tail, while along the back and belly the clean white of the paper acts as a source of living light, providing solidity and volume without relying on conventional shading. The overlapping, shifting contours around the head record the restless vibration of continuous movement.

Isolated in a setting merely hinted at by faint shadows and sweeps of grayish dust, the animal's body dialogues with the solitary presence of a lead rope hanging toward the lower plane. This slight tether introduces a decisive psychological friction: the struggle transcends a mere anatomical display to become a tangible confrontation between the imposition of control and wild instinct. The surface keeps intact the memory of the pigment's friction against the ground, establishing a visual testimony where the frankness of the stroke embodies with absolute eloquence the visceral, powerful, and irreducible nature of the creature.
