Curatorial analysis

The reverberating coastal light immediately dominates the gaze. Almost the entire lower half of the surface is surrendered to the dazzling whiteness of the sand and still water, resolved through delicate washes where the paper's bare white functions as the primary source of luminosity. In contrast to this diaphanous, nearly vacant expanse, the chromatic and narrative weight concentrates in a dense middle band, where tropical vegetation bursts into fiery yellows and deep greens.

Within this coastal shelter, a row of stylized palm trees rises in a vertical rhythm that fractures the horizontality of the marine horizon. Their golden fronds, captured with swift, loose brushstrokes, appear to vibrate beneath an unforgiving sun. Directly below, sheltered within the grove's shadows, the silhouettes of vernacular dwellings emerge with reddish roofs alongside a cluster of beached skiffs. These boats, delineated with crisp cerulean and white strokes, introduce a lilting curve that connects the solid shore to the low tide.

A deliberate tension exists between the apparent void of the foreground and the compactness of the settlement. The shore is not empty by oversight, but rather through the rigor with which the marine atmosphere is registered, where glare dissolves contours and softens the land's unevenness. In the background, a mountain ridge barely sketched in violet and grey tones contains the retreat toward the open sea, closing the bay with a delicacy that contrasts with the botanical intensity.

Puerto Viejo thus unfolds as a sensory experience of Caribbean noon, where time feels suspended in the stillness of the canoes and the hum of heat across the shore. The economy of the painterly gesture does not seek to describe every leaf or ocean ripple, but rather to distill the memory of an instant saturated with light.
