Curatorial analysis

The fold governs the entire surface. Before the eye registers a figure or a symbolic diagram, what asserts itself is the physical tension of a substrate fractured, compressed, and reopened. Roberto Huezo articulates a dialectic between geometric rigor and the organic fragility of the material, where each crease acts as an incision that traps shadow and modulates the ambient light in mineral gold and ochre tones.

At the center, a deeply darkened disc condenses the energy of the plane. Instead of presenting as a flat stain, this circle is divided by a radial web of creases and a horizontal line that acts as a silent equator. The black pigment, applied with subtle gradations, seems to have settled into the deepest furrows of the wrinkles, generating a tactile texture reminiscent of parched skin, a chrysalis, or fossilized plant bark. Emanating from this darkened zone, lines of force shoot outward toward the margins, expanding the visual field beyond the edges of the frame.

This peripheral radiation transforms the field into an expansive wave. The wrinkles in the support behave like orographic ridges and valleys under a light that seems to emanate as much from the pigment itself as from external illumination. The chromatic duality is austere (barely the vibration of mustard yellow confronting soot and deep brown), yet this economy is sufficient to grant the composition a monumental presence despite its intermediate scale.

The image invites varied readings: it may function as a primordial eye, a gravitational vortex, or an eclipsed star arrested at its point of maximum opacity. In titling it Mandala, Huezo anchors the piece to a meditative dimension, not through traditional geometric cleanliness, but through the wound and memory of the substrate. The stillness of the work arises, paradoxically, from an accumulation of tensions that never truly dissipate.
