Curatorial analysis

A deep pulsation dominates the space from the very first visual encounter. Red does not operate here as mere surface pigment, but as a luminous element trapped within the very flesh of the support. Four straight folds trace a cross that structures the canvas into regular quadrants, yet that initial geometric rigidity is immediately disrupted by a system of ripples, wrinkles, and drapery that vibrates like velvet or taut organic matter.

At the focal point of the plane, the fabric appears drawn into a dark vortex. It is there that the mandala's core resides: a tenebrous disc bearing four incandescent vermilion dots. These points concentrate the maximum luminous density of the work and mirror the quadrants carved out by the fold lines. Visual tension constantly oscillates between this central anchor gathering the surface and the diagonal shadows that fan outward toward the framing edges.

The tactile treatment achieves a striking optical illusion. The shifts between crimson and garnet simulate the pliability of a heavy textile that has been creased, manipulated, and strained by opposing forces before settling. Light does not strike from an external recognizable source; rather, it emanates from the ridges of the folds, contrasting sharply with the blackened valleys that consume the lower periphery.

By titling the piece as a mandala, Roberto Huezo shifts meditative practice away from decorative order toward a visceral experience. This is not a serene, pristine geometry meant for detached contemplation, but an invocation of internal heat, the pulse of blood, or the physical resilience of a body subjected to folding. It is an encounter with a gravitational core that draws the gaze inward, demanding an immersion in the smoldering shadows of its own mystery.
