Curatorial analysis

The gouge cut commands the space before the gaze can even decipher the bodies. The wood has been hollowed out with an almost physical force: broad, restless furrows that tear splinters of light to define the weathered profiles of three seated men and one standing, silhouetted on the right next to a broom. In this nocturnal or deeply shadowed scene, the chiaroscuro does not obey natural lighting, but an interior rhythm where the deep black of the ink and a dense terracotta hue intertwine to sustain the compact presence of the figures.

The spatial arrangement dispenses with any wide horizon to concentrate on the proximity of the bodies. The figures, dressed in brimmed hats and sober suits, gather in a silent conversation or a shared pause following the day's labor. The arm resting on the backrest, the clasped fingers, and the tilt of the faces weave a network of heavy diagonals and curves that anchor the men to the ground. The sharpest white incisions, reserved from the paper, burst out at strategic points, illuminating the glint of a cheekbone, the corner of a mouth, knobby knuckles, and the horizontal bands in the upper background, which hint at a distant glow or the close of an overcast evening.

A contained gravity resides in the relationship between manual labor and old age. The figure of the sweeper or worker on the right introduces a vertical tension that counterbalances the horizontal mass of those resting, turning the act of gathering into a testament to endurance and collective memory. By restricting the palette to this earthy duality of black and rust, the surface takes on a tactile, almost mineral quality, where the wood itself seems to speak of the time elapsed across human skin and labor.
