Curatorial analysis

A man in a suit walks with his eyes fixed on his mobile phone screen while extending one leg out over the abyss. The gesture, executed with the mechanical nonchalance of someone traversing an ordinary sidewalk, suspends the exact moment his foot loses contact with the surface. Below, barely supporting him, a small conveyor belt rests on the ledge of an isolated rock formation surrounded by mist. There are no tangible bars; the confinement declared in the title dispenses with metal grates and manifests instead in this blind march that confuses forward momentum with condemnation.

The mastery of grisaille transforms oil on canvas into an experience close to graphite drawing or nineteenth-century lithography. The reduction to black, white, and an extensive range of silvery grays focuses attention on the precision of volume. The fabric of the suit reveals dense, heavy folds, the porous texture of the rock contrasts with the metallic coolness of the machine, and the luminous haze of the background envelops the scene in an oneiric atmosphere, where any sense of time seems suspended.

The structural tension rests upon that misstep. The vertical axis of the upright, absorbed torso collides with the extended diagonal of the left leg, producing an impending imbalance to which the figure remains entirely oblivious. The treadmill, conceived to move without advancing in space, becomes a precarious platform: continuing to step forward implies falling into the void, while halting means remaining tethered to the crag. This spatial paradox turns the mobile device into more than a mere distraction; it becomes the psychological anchor disconnecting him completely from his own survival.
