Curatorial analysis

An enveloping, almost aquatic blue governs the entire scene, suspending bodies in a weightless space where time seems to have halted its march. At the center of this chromatic ocean, a neatly profiled female figure moves forward, erect on a small-wheeled contraption that defies any notion of earthly speed. Her silhouette glows in cream tones and golden glimmers, standing as the only solid focal point of light against the vastness of the background.

The space does not respond to traditional perspective laws, but rather to a dreamlike logic in which distinct presences coexist. In the lower left corner emerges a face crowned with a blue-feathered hat upon which a bird perches, whose outstretched hand seeks contact with the traveler in a gesture between farewell and omen. Toward the far right, another female figure dissolves like a vertical shadow among the canvas modulations, watchful and motionless, providing a balance that anchors the horizontality of the motion.

The painterly matter works here through glazes and luminous contrasts. There are areas where the oil thins out to reveal the vibration of the support, while denser touches and small chromatic accents awaken the surface in the faces, headdresses, and mechanical framework of the wheels. The white lines on the lower plane suggest a faint track, barely a graphic hint sustaining the journey.

Far from a competitive event, this race unfolds as an introspective journey. Rafael Fernández transforms locomotion into an act of poised serenity, where vehicles and characters do not vie with one another, but rather take part in a silent procession through memory and poetic fantasy.
