Curatorial analysis

A female face seen in sharp profile carries a delirious universe atop her head. All the calm of the painting resides in that crisp jawline and steady gaze, while above it unfolds a hybrid architecture of chimeras, festive horns, and sailing ships that defy gravity. The serenity of the countenance does not compete with this excess; rather, it serves as its anchor and pedestal.

The headdress operates as a theater of layered materials. The artist imprints lace textures that simulate scaly skins or Gothic latticework, over which drip luminous yellows, stains of crimson, and an earthy brown that models the hull of a tiny vessel. The gargoyle reference, stated in the title, does not emerge as a sinister creature of stone, but as a winged, festive chimera culminating in a speckled horn, oriented in the opposite direction to the woman. This tension between the gaze advancing toward the right and the beast watching toward the left creates a dynamic, almost heraldic balance.

The background, worked with a gentle spray-paint grain, divides the atmosphere into two bands of lavender and golden grey. This artificial mist isolates the figure in a suspended time, crowned in the upper corner by a magenta crescent moon, like a graphic seal affirming the reverie.

Far from a merely decorative fantasy, the disproportionate weight upon the brow suggests a mind inhabited by intimate navigations and private mythologies. Rafael Fernández transforms the intimate scale of the painting (twenty-four centimeters high) into a monumental altarpiece where textile matter, graphic incision, and pure color build an allegory of memory and poetic daydream.
