Curatorial analysis

A swarm of yellow dabs suspends any notion of ground or sky. On this canvas by Álvaro Gómez, the eye finds neither a fixed center nor a horizon line to rest upon; it is immediately caught in a saturation that pulses like a living fabric. Hundreds of small corollas or petals, modeled through short, curved brushstrokes retaining an almost sculptural impasto, seem to flutter in an extreme close-up before our eyes. Each of these shapes carries its own shadow, a dark umber belly that grants it three-dimensional volume and projects it outward, optically severing it from the background.

Behind that vibrant warm tide operates a second world, quiet and shadowy. Gómez builds an underwater or twilight atmosphere through gradations of turquoise, petroleum blue, and deep green, where subtle stems and impressions of fronds reminiscent of ferns and undergrowth vegetation emerge. Light does not emanate from a recognizable exterior source; it radiates from the pale cerulean clearings breathing between the flowers, generating an ongoing dialectic between the aquatic chill of the ground and the electric warmth of the floating touches. Toward the right, the shadows thicken, as though an unseen cloud or the canopy of an overarching tree briefly veiled a section of the tapestry.

The scale of the painting magnifies the experience until it becomes immersive. By erasing the boundaries of the foliage, the work oscillates between botanical miniature and expansive landscape: it can be read as a microscopic observation of an overgrown meadow or as a pond where drifting blossoms scatter over dark currents. That duality between the repetitive order of the pattern and the organic anarchy of each individual gesture endows the surface with a dynamism that defies the stillness of painting, turning the plane into a field of visual resonance that vibrates long after the initial glance.
