Curatorial analysis

A dizzying overhead perspective destabilizes any notion of solid ground in Gato Azul (desde las alturas). From the upper cornice of an oversized chest of drawers, an ultramarine feline watches over a domestic space that seems to collapse inward. The gaze does not merely observe the interior: it plunges into it. Carlos Tapia subverts traditional gravity through an accelerated perspective where walls striped in yellow and vermilion converge upon a checkered floor that absorbs, like a vortex, both the furnishings and the room's calm.

This free fall is articulated through extreme chromatic tensions. The dense, almost electric blue of the dominant predator sharply contrasts with the warm expanse of the walls, while two other felines complete a quiet choreography: a red one darting across the central tilework, and a purple one curled up, expectant, in the lower corner. Around this triangle of animal gazes, human objects have lost their moorings. An armchair, a displaced door, and an overturned stand spilling white flowers with winding green stems act as remnants of a domestic wreckage, becoming curving rhythms against the radial orthogonal lines.

The pictorial execution sustains this agitation through a textured and decisive brushstroke, particularly evident across the spine of the blue cat and the impastos shaping the botanical disarray. There is no conventional light source regulating shadows; rather, pure pigment radiates its own luminosity, heightening an atmosphere suspended between wakefulness and fable. The painting thus achieves a complete inversion of hierarchies: human rational architecture lies dismantled and sliding away, subordinate to the sovereign, magnetic domain of the watcher looking down from above.
