Curatorial analysis

Absolute roundness governs the paper. Prior to recognizable anatomies, what commands the eye is a succession of ovoid and spherical volumes that seem to inflate out of the white of the support. Jorge Jiménez Deredia presents here a sequence of bodies curled inward upon themselves, where the human figure does not seek to pose or stand upright, but rather to return to an elemental, matrix-like condition. The graphite models the surface of these compact masses with an exceedingly soft sfumato, generating a tactile sensation of polish that translates sculptural thought into the two-dimensionality of drawing.

The rhythm is articulated through a circular choreography of continuous curves. In the foreground, a crouching figure holds a frontal gaze toward the viewer; its face, serene and almost archetypal, barely peeks above an enlarged knee that completes the body's protective arc. Flanking it and toward the background, other figures complete this metamorphic cycle: profiles emerging from the bulbous mass, smooth backs resembling river stones or seeds about to open. There are no edges or angular breaks, only an enveloping fluidity that merges trunk, limbs, and head into a single organic pulse.

The light does not originate from an external or theatrical source, but rather emanates from the paper areas left untouched by graphite, while gradual shading supplies weight and grazing ground shadows along the base. This apparent weightlessness of the figures, suspended in an empty space devoid of horizon or architectural references, heightens the notion of genesis. By titling the work Evolución, the artist suggests a continuous transition between mineral matter, biology in a state of gestation, and consciousness. Through the restraint of the stroke, the piece condenses that pursuit of wholeness where the human body is not a limit, but the vessel of an indivisible totality.
