Curatorial analysis

The pen-and-ink stroke does not seek to delineate a fixed subject, but rather to capture a metamorphosis in progress. Against the pale ground of the paper, the black ink acts like a living network germinating from the center: an equine creature with a dark muzzle and tied mane coexists with scaled patterns, weightless spheres floating to the left, and the serene countenance of a small female figure clad in a lace collar. There is no sharp boundary separating the human, the animal, and the botanical; everything seems to belong to the same oneiric fabric.

The composition is organized around a dense, swirling core that unfolds along subtle diagonals. The pressure of the nib modulates extreme visual tensions: there are areas where dense cross-hatching and meticulous line work build deep shadows of an almost tactile texture, while in other sections the line barely brushes the surface to suggest contours that fade away. The body of the figure on the right, for instance, is defined almost entirely by the untouched reserve of white, contrasting with the dark, organic mass of the cluster. This breathing room between emptiness and the tangle of marks lends a vibrant rhythm to the space.

This chromatic economy, contained within a format of just twenty-seven by twenty-three centimeters, does not diminish the breadth of its atmosphere. The forms do not carry weight, but rather gravitate as if suspended in a fleeting memory or a fable paused in time. The handwritten dedication in the lower right corner, dated in San José in October 1978, confirms the intimate nature of the drawing, conceived as a direct gesture where the mastery of the hand turns minimal marks into a universe brimming with mystery.
