Curatorial analysis

An overflowing and almost noisy vitality governs this painting, where the working-class neighborhood becomes a choral stage that deliberately dispenses with classical perspective. The street, worn by potholes and small bits of debris, supports a tightly packed row of houses competing in the intensity of their pigments: violets, acid greens, turquoises, and rusted corrugated roofs. Each facade functions as an independent altarpiece, inhabited by simultaneous micro-stories unfolding in plain sight.

The middle ground articulates a choreography of urban archetypes that captures the pulse of neighborhood survival and coexistence. On the left, a hunched scavenger pushes a wheelbarrow loaded with scrap metal; nearby, a neighbor waters her ferns, a taciturn walker moves along, a woman stands absorbed in taking a self-portrait on her phone, and two lovers embrace in a passionate kiss against a stone fence. Toward the right, voluptuous women cross paths with a baby stroller and stray dogs inspecting the asphalt. Above, on the corrugated roof, two workers secure a sheet of metal, oblivious to the transit below.

The atmospheric treatment introduces a subtle temporal transgression: above the puffy clouds and distant profiles of corporate high-rises, the daytime sky abruptly transitions into a starry night sky crowned by a full moon and discreet furtive sightings. This coexistence of temporal and spatial registers, reinforced by precise drawing with bold black contours and saturated colors, reclaims the costumbrista chronicle without slipping into naive illustration. The canvas celebrates the organized chaos of the Latin American city, where infrastructural precariousness and the everyday drive of its inhabitants coexist through a lucid, festive, and irony-laced gaze.
