Curatorial analysis

The monumental scale of this panoramic canvas commands an exuberant vision in which the Costa Rican capital sheds all functional sobriety. Carlos Tapia reworks the urban grid of San José through an enveloping perspective that bends space and summons the city's major architectural landmarks into an euphoric dialogue: the Central Park Kiosk crowned by golden rays, the columns of the Melico Salazar Popular Theater, the Palace Cinema, the Variedades Theater, and the Neo-Mudéjar contours of the Castillo del Moro. Rather than serving as a strict documentary record, the architecture bends and stretches like a living theatrical set, articulated by a curving rhythm that thrusts every facade into the foreground.

The painted surface is structured through thick, dark contour lines containing fields of pure, saturated pigment. This sharp delimitation links the visual approach to stained glass or graphic art, heightening the acrylic medium to an almost hypnotic vibrancy where purples, warm yellows, intense reds, and glowing cyans coexist. The mark-making is clean and decisive, organizing the metropolis's apparent chaos without muting its frantic pulse. Along this roadway winding across red asphalt and lilac paths, small narrative details, such as the urban route bus and the zoomorphic figures playing music from a cornice, infuse the scene with wry intimacy.

The radiance emanating from the central bandstand functions as a symbolic axis illuminating both architectural memory and street life. By condensing eras and styles onto a single vibrant plane, the work proposes an affective reading of the city center, transforming everyday surroundings into a carnivalesque stage where heritage is not observed with nostalgic detachment, but celebrated as an awake, glittering, and perpetually moving organism.
