Curatorial analysis

An uninterrupted vertical tension dominates nearly one hundred and seventy centimeters of canvas. Carlos Tapia breaks down Barcelona’s emblematic architecture into an upward flight where the laws of statics surrender to graphic dynamism. The pinnacles of the Sagrada Família, crowned by their distinctive floral finials, rise alongside undulating cornices and fragmented pediments, as if stone had acquired the malleable plasticity of a living organism reaching outward into the sky.

The surface functions through a firm, thick contour line, akin to the logic of stained glass or modern graphic design. Each chromatic plane is bound by black strokes that isolate and simultaneously amplify the vibration of the pigments. Rather than yielding to atmospheric shadow or mimetic three-dimensionality, the acrylic settles into compact masses of pure color: strident fuchsias, incandescent yellows, emerald greens, and vermilion reds colliding with cool lavenders and a luminous blue ground. This chromatic treatment cancels the mineral weight of modernist and Gothic cathedrals, replacing it with an almost festive vitality.

The upward, worm's-eye perspective induces a sensation of vertigo, compelling the viewer to follow accelerating diagonals that converge into sharp pinnacles. Tapia does not seek to document the historical monument with archaeological fidelity, but rather to distill the sensory experience of urban wonder, that overwhelming impression where facades overlap in memory as a symphony of curved and acute rhythms. The cityscape is thus reinvented as a territory where formal fantasy and chromatic euphoria claim absolute prominence.
