Curatorial analysis

A centrifugal force seems to organize the buildings, spires, and canopies of this urban landscape, discarding any conventional gravity. The space curves into a wide-angle view where architectures appear to rise and buckle at once, steered by taut diagonals converging toward a limpid patch of blue sky. In the lower ground, a domed structure resembling a mechanical carousel or a festive pavilion imposes its round volume, anchoring a scene that would otherwise feel on the verge of lifting off.

Carlos Tapia constructs this city through a rigorous interplay of faceting. Geometric planes, defined by sharp and unrelenting black outlines, alternate between earthy and golden surfaces with sudden bursts of primary and secondary color: intense reds, fuchsias, purples, and emerald greens. This dominant ocher ground lends a sandy coherence to the whole, counterbalancing the stridency of the chromatic flashes and granting the scene a timeless atmosphere, akin to an antique architectural model or a fantastical citadel suspended in a perpetual cycle of celebration.

The visual rhythm is dictated by the recurrence of spikes, arches, and threaded spheres that crown the towers, as though the entire city were a piece of ludic machinery. There is an ongoing dialogue between the circus-like and the monumental; the facades recall both futuristic skyscrapers and articulated carnival awnings. This duality dissolves the boundary between the cosmopolitan center and the amusement park.

The painting ultimately celebrates urban artifice as an overflowing, living organism. Rather than a documentary representation of a metropolis, what appears is the condensation of its festive and delirious pulse, where each volume takes part in a geometric dance that defies equilibrium without ever surrendering its constructive precision.
