Curatorial analysis

The exchange of gazes holds an almost electric current: the feline's whiskers and the child's wide, radiating eyelashes not only touch, but blur into a single network of aggressive barbs. Amighetti stages the confrontation not as a domestic anecdote, but as an encounter between equals, where the supposed docility of childhood completely fractures. The cat, crouched within a dense, massive body that dominates the left half of the frame, bares its teeth in a grimace of alarm or warning. To the right, the child’s face responds with an identical clenching, stripped of innocence and overtaken by a feral intensity.

The woodcut matrix imparts a deliberate violence to the space. The gouge cuts into the wood are sharp and decisive, exposing the whiteness of the paper like luminous incisions that carve out the furrowed brow, the cheeks, and the animal’s spine. In the background, a flat plane of cerulean blue preserves the organic grain of the woodblock, lending the atmosphere an earthy vibration that contrasts with the compact density of the black ink. This intermediate plane does not soften the clash; instead, it acts as a resonance chamber where the shadows gain sculptural weight and the bare white lines operate like nervous discharges.

The composition eschews any traditional vertical hierarchy. The cat's tail sweeps down toward the lower left corner, establishing an arc of tension that balances the boy’s bust on the opposite side. No physical distance mediates between the two figures, only the vibration of an uneasy proximity. Rather than depicting a fleeting scuffle, the print captures a suspended instant in which animal instinct and human consciousness recognize each other at their rawest, reminding us that in the realm of pure emotion, the boundaries between species and reason dissolve.
