Curatorial analysis

Two asymmetrical gazes govern the paper: below, the slit, sightless eyes of the human figure; above, two slits of electric yellow belonging to the feline, concentrating the entire visual sharpness of the scene. This contrast turns the portrait into a doubling. The woman, with her elongated neck and facial features polished like pre-Columbian stone, seems immersed in quiet introspection, while the animal atop her head acts as an alert watchman that never blinks.

The cat's body is not merely perched on the skull, but embraces it organically, merging with the hairline and culminating in a dense tail that sweeps down to the right in a rhythmic curve. That dark mass generates a sculptural weight that counterbalances the strict frontality of the bust. Fernando Carballo relies on a meticulous cross-hatching, built through layers of graphite and dry pigment intersecting in oblique directions. The linear mesh does not attempt to conceal the drafting hand; rather, it bares the grain of the paper and the friction of the medium, allowing the tonal transitions across cheekbones and collarbone to breathe amid the warmth of terracotta and ocher.

Around the figures, the background remains a suspended atmosphere, modulated solely by a subtle lattice of golds and grays that surrenders full prominence to the dark central mass. The feline thus assumes the stature of a mental totem or materialized thought, a feral alter ego guarding or keeping vigil over the woman's interior world. Rather than a domestic anecdote, the scene proposes a silent communion between instinct and consciousness, where true sight resides not within the figure facing forward, but in the creature crowning her silence.
