Curatorial analysis

The stone in this view of Tepoztlán does not rest; it burns beneath an unrelenting light. In contrast to the usual mineral heaviness with which mountains are typically rendered, the cliffs rise here like solid flames, where cadmium red, coral, and glowing orange supplant any mimetic ambition. Carlos Tapia transforms the rocky mass into a thermal and vibrational event, bounded by thick indigo lines that trace every crevice and heighten its monumentality.

This chromatic structure organizes the plane into three simultaneous forces. At the base, a dense carpet of vegetation resolved through short, impasto brushstrokes in deep greens anchors the visual weight of the canvas. Above this band, the crags shoot upward in vertical columns, akin to the pipes of an immense natural organ where light refracts in ochre and lilac modulations. Crowning the mountain range, the atmosphere bursts into gusts of pure white applied with gestural speed over cobalt blue, tracing an upward current that extends and disperses the vertical momentum of the rocks.

The medium is exposed with total frankness upon the surface. The acrylic makes no attempt to blend transitions, but rather asserts the trace of the brushstroke, alternating areas of rough impasto in the foliage with firm, continuous lines that sculpt the rocky relief. The dark contour does not confine the forms, but acts as a field of electric tension that makes them vibrate against the sky. Rather than describing a recognizable geographic enclave, the painting proposes a frontal encounter with the telluric power of the landscape, where earth and firmament seem to share the same archaic energy, suspended in a moment of luminous combustion.
