Curatorial analysis

A cerulean blue, flat and devoid of atmospheric haze, sustains the glowing silhouette of a pink poui tree (roble sabana) in full bloom. Far from any botanical fidelity or documentary landscape tradition, this tree operates as a playful, cosmic axis rising from a curved hilltop, where reddish, sinewy roots anchor into the ground amid small dabs of grass and white blossoms. Its sinuous branches not only carry dense clusters of pink flowers and suspended orange orbs that hang like impossible fruit, but also serve as the scaffolding for a fantastical fauna.

The space is governed by a bold black outline that delineates, encases, and lends graphic rhythm to every figure. Within these borders, color completely detaches from objective reality. Felines with coats of pink, ochre, and violet, embellished with luminous spirals upon their flanks, climb, dangle upside down, or rest with wide, conspiratorial eyes. A speckled serpent scales the trunk, coiling with plant-like cadence, while a row of long-tailed birds perches mere inches from potential predators. The painting diffuses natural violence; the interaction among cats, birds, and amphibians unfolds as a pact of harmonious, innocent coexistence.

The acrylic medium settles into smooth planes and saturated colors, deliberately eschewing chiaroscuro to heighten the graphic frontality of the design. The chromatic contrasts are direct: the floral magenta against the cerulean ground, the acidic greens of the foliage against the warm reddish-brown of the bark, and the incandescent orange spheres that punctuate the canopy like rhythmic accents. By transforming the Costa Rican roble sabana into a tree of life populated by domestic and wild chimeras, a festive vision is articulated, where tropical exuberance becomes a rigorous visual game, suspended between vernacular myth and pure fantasy.
