Curatorial analysis

The decisive verticality of the format (82 × 35 cm) imposes a zoological column that reformulates the classic Brothers Grimm tale through a vibrant, raw lens. Four figures hold themselves in an improbable balance: a donkey with a frontal gaze and an almost human grimace carries an alert dog on its hindquarters, atop which stands a feline cat with green and yellow striped fur, crowned at the apex by a fuchsia rooster with a scarlet crest crowing into the night.

The scene unfolds in a spectral village where light does not originate from the celestial bodies, but rather from an internal fluorescence bathing the protagonists and tinting the rooftops with radioactive lime-green. At the base, the wet ground pulses with splatters and drips of cobalt and cerulean blue, evoking freshly rained asphalt where shadows dissolve into watery reflections. This electric, high-contrast palette isolates the animal pyramid from the simplified architectural volumes receding toward the flanks, while a black vault dotted with white stars caps the upper edge like a theatrical curtain.

Herrera applies acrylic paint with palpable gestural impasto, merging heavy strokes with dark contours that emphasize the graphic clarity of each creature. Textural handling varies: the rooster’s plumage gains relief through concentric dabs of magenta and violet, while the coats of the donkey and dog exhibit acid-ochre modeling resolved through swift, vigorous brushwork. The wide-eyed, conspiratorial stares of all four characters inject a sharp, biting irony into the ensemble.

This living totem moves beyond the mere folk tale anecdote to become a monument to coordinated fragility. By condensing the scale into such a narrow band, the painting transforms the necessity of mutual aid into an act of visual defiance against the surrounding darkness.
