Curatorial analysis
A feline gaze emerges where there should only be a harvest. On a monumental, nearly square canvas, a cat's head is articulated entirely through a botanical and fruiting assemblage. The reference to Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s illusionistic play is explicit from the title, yet here the Mannerist still-life tradition shifts into a tropical chromatic exuberance, resolved with the immediacy and graphic solidity of contemporary art.
The plane is structured through a strict balance between anatomical symmetry and organic overflow. A wedge of ripe watermelon defines the right ear, while a cluster of bananas and curved fruits balances the left. At the center, a dense cluster of blackberries or blossoms forms the forehead, crowning a physiognomic structure where the eye sockets are shaped by citrus slices and packed tubers. The nose and snout emerge from mushrooms, fleshy fruits, and pods that converge toward a broad vegetable foundation: two large, veined leaves in green and yellow that serve as a sculptural neck, stabilizing the figure against a flat mauve background.
This entire vegetal mass gains firmness through a continuous, dark contour, reminiscent of stained glass or graphic illustration, enclosing each fruit within its own perimeter of pure saturation. Carlos Tapia modulates surfaces with small flecks of light, stippling, and striations that grant each element an independent tactile vibration. A constant dialogue unfolds between the inert nature of the pantry and the agile spirit of the animal residing within it.
The piece confronts the viewer through its colossal scale, turning what could have been a playful miniature into a formidable, almost totemic presence. By merging herbivorous bounty with the quintessential carnivore, the image subverts the conventions of fable, celebrating an appetite for life where nature is not consumed, but embodied.
