Curatorial analysis

A network of bare, whitish and violet branches stands between the viewer's gaze and the vastness of the mountain range. These nearly osseous plant forms do not passively frame the view; they vibrate with a sinuous calligraphy that agitates the foreground and tensions the depth. Behind them, the terrain breaks into rounded knolls of incandescent yellow, a vibrant ochre that absorbs the harsh glare and clashes directly with the blue masses rising at the horizon.

Built upon a strict dialectic of complements, the scene pits the solar warmth of high-altitude grasses against the mineral chill of distant mountains. Guido Sáenz modulates this clash through shadows of indigo and deep violet that settle into the hollows, articulating geological volume without relying on traditional chiaroscuro. The paint is applied with dense fluidity: each fold of the land follows a tactile direction, while the back massifs condense into calmer layers of cerulean, cobalt, and ultramarine.

The elevated vantage point dispenses with any human or domestic reference. There are no roads or shelters; scale is sensed solely through the expansion of the horizon and the tenacity with which this dry vegetation, characteristic of high paramo heights, colonizes the slope. The sky, streaked with turquoise and pale yellow, crowns an atmosphere where the stillness of the relief contrasts with the nervous pulse of the branches.

The painting thus proposes a contemplative experience that resists placid bucolism. Rather than a topographical record, the cordillera unfolds as a living tectonic force, where light does not merely graze the landscape but sets it ablaze, exposing it to absolute wilderness.
