Curatorial analysis

The luminous green of the foreground hills imposes an undulating cadence that organizes the entire gaze. Guido Sáenz models this slope through a sinuous band of sunlit pasture descending diagonally toward the right, intercepted by dark gullies and dense wooded groves. The reddish earth, visible on the eroded foothills and across a steep crag to the right, introduces a warm vibration that breaks the vegetal dominance and anchors the topography in its mineral condition.

Toward the background, space expands through successive layers of mountain ranges that lose material weight as they recede. The precision of the volumes yields to a bluish, turquoise haze characteristic of the intermontane valley, where the trapezoidal silhouette of a distant peak claims the center of the horizon. This atmospheric gradation does not seek to describe the canton with cartographic detachment, but rather to register the density of the humid air enveloping the heights. The counterpoint between the tactile immediacy of the frontal ridge and the vaporous distance generates a serene depth, guiding the eye smoothly between immediate shelter and mountainous infinity.

The handling of the oil reveals an agile execution devoid of artifice. On the forward slopes, the brush combs the pigment with short diagonal strokes that suggest the texture of grass and the coarseness of the earth; in the distant mountains, conversely, the paint thins and softens into seamless glazes that merge the summits with a milky sky. The result is a contemplative landscape that avoids easy picturesque tropes to focus on the respiration of the mountain range: a quiet dialogue between the light caressing the ridges and the silent gloom dwelling in the depths of the ravines.
