Curatorial analysis

The abrupt slope of the hillside guides the gaze with the momentum of an incline rolling into the depths of the frame. In Desde Arriba, Guido Sáenz presents an elevated vantage point where the land does not rest; it convulses beneath a dense sky laden with leaden clouds and shreds of pale light. The initial focus falls upon the luminous crest of the central hill, bathed in a lime-green band that challenges the ambient gloom and breaks the valley's stillness.

Against this descending tide of grasslands, the dry, twisted tree in the foreground serves as a stern anchor. Its bare silhouette, fractured into dark branches that claw at the space, interrupts the hillside's sweeping diagonal and asserts a fragile verticality. Toward the opposite edge, another leafless trunk answers this presence and encloses the lower register, framing the rugged scene. Between them, the ground breathes through vigorous impasto and directional brushstrokes that convey the relentless movement of wind across the brush.

Toward the horizon, the terrain plunges into hollows of cool shadow before rising into mountain ridges rendered in indigo blues and violet tones. This layering of cordilleras generates an overwhelming sense of depth, where overhead light seeks rifts in the storm to illuminate isolated patches of earth. The paint gathers density on the highlighted ridges and turns ethereal across the distant peaks, dissolving the boundary between rock and atmosphere.

This high vantage point retains the tension of upland landscapes where weather shifts without warning. The expressive handling of light and pigment does not merely depict a rural panorama, but a living, pulsating nature. The viewer is left with the sensation of an atmosphere suspended in time, seized at the exact instant when the brilliance of the hill fights against being swallowed by the storm.
