Curatorial analysis

The most recognizable geological monument of the Costa Rican mountain range appears stripped of its mineral severity to transform into a resounding chromatic outburst. The viewer's gaze immediately encounters the verticality of the crags, whose stone facets are not modulated by traditional chiaroscuro, but articulated through a mosaic of pure, contrasting planes where radiant ochre, magenta, fiery orange, and deep violet coexist.

This compartmentalization of the rocky crests, bounded by bold dark contour lines, evokes the fragmented luminosity of stained glass. Each monolith breaks down into tonal plates that forgo mimesis to operate with dazzling visual autonomy: light does not bathe the stone from an external source, but emanates from within the pictorial matter itself. Facing this display of mineral warmth, the sky extends as a homogeneous plane of cerulean blue, a dense and calm expanse that contains the upward vibration of the relief.

In the lower third, the dense páramo vegetation supports the composition through a very different tactile logic. While the summits resolve into flat, geometric fields, the montane forest is built as an organic tangle of deep, mossy, somber greens, crossed by a delicate calligraphy of linear strokes in white and pale green indicating branches and scrub. This contrast between the dense plant weave and the almost crystalline geometric treatment of the bluffs establishes a powerful tension between the formless and the structured.

The scene transfigures a páramo landscape typically associated with cold, mist, and austerity into a solar, almost festive celebration of the territory. By converting stone into a vibrant assemblage of pure color, the canvas proposes an affective, vital reading of the peak, where national geography ceases to be a topographic document and becomes a luminous totem of enduring energy.
