Curatorial analysis

The red bursts forth with the force of an expansive tide. Across two meters of width, a dense multitude of poppies or scarlet flowers claims the lower plane, ascending in a vibrant pulse that denies any rest to the eye. There is no visible earth nor conventional horizon; the ground is purely pictorial, a tightly woven tapestry of petals where the intensity of vermilion thickens and overlaps to the point of physical overflow.

In the upper zone, the work introduces a rigorous counterpoint through gravity. While the red corollas appear to climb or drift upward with airy lightness, the background unfolds in a vertical curtain of washes and drippings. Greyish tones, faded whites, and earthy ochres descend like a mineral rain, dissolving the solidity of space. This dialogue between the rising mass of blooms and the fluid descent of the wash creates an unstable atmosphere, suspended between a torrential downpour and the mist of a spectral forest.

Toward the margins and the vegetative canopy, filiform stems and dark centers gain clarity, stippling the space like scattered notes across a broken score. That presence of black marks and concise graphics at the heart of each flower disrupts any decorative complacency of the botanical motif, charging it with an organic, almost visceral vibration. The isolated blossoms that manage to scale toward the upper mist no longer form a cluster; they remain suspended like solitary sentinels or embers adrift in the wind.

Álvaro Gómez conceives the garden as an act of overflow rather than a tranquil landscape. The painting oscillates between biological exuberance and abstract dissolution: where the foliage deconstructs, the canvas reveals that its true subject is not the individual flower, but the unrelenting energy of living matter resisting the dissolving power of water and time.
