Curatorial analysis

A row of knotty stakes advances into the foreground, twisting like living bodies that demarcate the boundary between the viewer and the sunlit pasture. Guido Sáenz dispenses here with traditional bucolic stillness; the fence is not a mere dividing barrier, but a vegetal chorus of sinuous forms, where each post of living wood exhibits its own gesture, laden with impasto and accentuated by a low light that ignites its edges in terracotta and brilliant yellow hues.

The space is structured through a marked tension between the verticality of this enclosure and the horizontal expanse of the topography. On the right, a stylized tree projects its dense canopy upward, anchoring the composition and providing balance before the eye drifts into the successive planes. Behind the posts, a swath of pasture glows under radiant sunlight, resolved in acid yellows and greens that contrast sharply with the bluish and violet shadows cast across the ground. Farther back, the hills shed their volumetric definition to dissolve into cobalt blue glazes and atmospheric violets, allowing the mountain ridge to converse with an expansive sky.

That sky claims nearly the upper half of the canvas, acting as the dynamic engine of the scene. Rather than a passive expanse, Sáenz constructs a living atmosphere through rapid, impasted diagonal brushstrokes, where white clouds splinter against a saturated cerulean blue. The painting breathes the thermal vibration of high-altitude tropical midday, where blinding luminosity sets the air into apparent motion.

The living fence thus fulfills a double role: it registers human labor upon the land while bearing witness to nature's untamed resilience, refusing to submit to the geometric rigidity of the barbed wire.
