Curatorial analysis

The speed with which the pictorial matter disintegrates across the canvas dictates the first impression. A horizontal sweep blurs the figure's face and torso, dissolving precise contours into nearly transparent trails of oil. The flesh does not settle as static volume; it vibrates like an apparition captured in a long photographic exposure. Against a cavernous ground governed by deep blacks and barely perceptible shadowy greens, the body emerges with the spectral pallor of plaster illuminated by a flash of lightning.

The title proposes a mythological creature, yet the painting avoids literal anatomical illustration. The lower half does not painstakingly describe hooves or fur, resolving instead into a tide of heavy strokes in petroleum blue and asphalt, where the fabric of an evening gown and animal bulk entirely merge. A sustained tension exists between the vulnerable elegance of the bared torso and the dense, almost tectonic mass dragging the lower section toward the right of the frame. The right arm, angular and delicate, contrasts with the languid extension of the other limb, which seems to dissolve into the void before reaching the edge.

Shrouded in smoky, phlegmatic shadow, the eyes avoid any easy empathy. The gaze does not seek the viewer; it cuts through space with an icy detachment, underscored by the ashen tone of the windblown hair. Anaskina handles the oil by combining the opacity of thick impasto in the drapery with dry transparencies that reveal the weave of the canvas through the background's swept marks. What lingers on the retina is a suspended metamorphosis, a moment in which the female figure neither fully solidifies nor completely vanishes into the night, held only by the centrifugal pull of her own motion.
