Curatorial analysis

An expansive surge of cobalt blue occupies the plane with an almost claustrophobic density, eliminating any conventional horizon. Across this large format, Álvaro Gómez does not offer a distant view of a blooming field, but rather a frontal, vertiginous immersion into organic matter, where the accumulation of corollas transforms into an uninterrupted rhythmic pulse.

The surface is structured by two forces locked in open tension: vertical gravity and rhizomatic expansion. Across the upper register, a curtain of earthy, grey, and ochre drips runs downward like mineral rain or exposed roots along a geological fault. These trickles of thinned pigment act as a buffer against the profusion welling up from below. Toward the center and margins, the floral shapes overtake this vertical axis, climbing upward against the ashen veil in a gesture of botanical resilience.

The construction of the flowers reveals a singular interplay between the fluidity of chance and deliberate contour. Each bloom opens from aqueous puddles of cerulean blue that deepen into night-blue and charcoal toward their centers, evoking sap as concentrated ink. This mobile, liquid character contrasts sharply with the raw, mineral background, endowing the petals with an electric vibration that destabilizes the stillness of the canvas.

Beyond botanical reference, the work proposes a reflection on vitality as an act of insistence. Color does not serve a decorative purpose here, but operates as an overpowering presence that consumes the neutral earth. By dispensing with both sky and solid ground, the painting places the viewer within a blind spot of nature, submerged in a cycle where falling and blooming coexist within the exact same instant.
