Curatorial analysis

A meticulous archive of visual fragments unfolds across a compact grid where each wooden block functions as an autonomous memory capsule. The surface is organized through a rigorous orthogonal partitioning, yet it evades any static heaviness thanks to the constant alternation of depths, scales, and tactile treatments. Jacques Hervot articulates a contemporary cabinet where engravings of urban façades, canonical references to art history, kinetic patterns, marine fossils, and everyday objects evoking travel or contemplation, such as pipes, leather luggage, cocktail glasses, and pocket watches, coexist.

The dynamism of the structure rests on the direct confrontation between the two-dimensional graphic print and the three-dimensional matter of the support. Rows of spherical beads, fluted moldings, notched segments, and reliefs with drip or textile textures cause raking light to cast living shadows across the module seams. Against the predominant neutrality of ash grays, off-whites, and printing-press black, vibrant fields of ochre yellow, muted olive, and turquoise blue emerge. These blocks of pure color do not function as peripheral ornaments, but rather as rhythmic measures guiding the eye in discontinuous leaps, preventing the reading of the whole from turning linear.

By juxtaposing a butterfly resting on sheet music, an eye-bearing protective hand, fragmented gazes, and an early twentieth-century airplane, the work eliminates any conventional chronological order. Each segment retains its formal independence while contributing to the collective fabric of the panel. Hervot conceives this visual book as a mnemonic map where cultural cataloging and serendipitous discovery deliberately blur, transforming the assemblage into a device for exploring the sedimented layers of memory and everyday imagination.
