Curatorial analysis

A mantle of paper currency replaces the celestial vestments of the Marian figure. At first glance, the silhouette retains the silent contemplation of traditional devotional statuary, visible in the slight tilt of the head, the longitudinal drapery folds cascading downward, and the hands folded over the chest in an attitude of perpetual prayer. However, upon closing the viewing distance, the sculpted surface reveals a meticulous weave of carefully cut and assembled dollar bill fragments. Those green and black engraved lines, decontextualized numerals, and fragments of official signatures traverse the ceramic body, replacing sacred cloth with a graphic texture of strict accounting order.

Beneath this fiduciary tunic, the pedestal establishes an immediate and decisive luminous rupture. Entirely covered in gold leaf applied like faceted scales, the bulbous base catches ambient light in fractured glints that point directly to the opulence of baroque altarpieces and the craftsmanship of colonial reliquaries. The contrast between the sparkling warmth of the gilded metal and the muted, dry, almost clinical tone of the pasted bills creates an evident material tension. The sacred gold of ecclesiastical tradition upholds yet collides with the paper currency of contemporary global exchange.

The strict verticality of the ensemble sustains this conceptual charge without ever losing its formal composure. The facial features, barely hinted at beneath the geometric paper cuttings, do not direct their supplication toward a transcendent heaven, but remain trapped within the very skin of financial capital. By transforming circulating money into a shroud and devotion into a tangible fetish, Alexander Chaves confronts two belief systems that have shared temples across centuries: spiritual faith and economic idolatry are fused into a single silent body.
