Curatorial analysis
Curatorial analysis
A sideward glance and an open smile immediately dismantle the usual contrivance of the myth. Rather than the polished sheen of cinema or the strident saturation of pop art, Marilyn Monroe appears here retrieved in an almost disarming intimacy, suspended in a direct dialogue between the solidity of drawing and the fluidity of paint. There is no pursuit of photographic idealization here, but rather the painterly capture of a fleeting attitude.
The figure is structured along a taut diagonal ascending from the dark mass of the lower garment toward the face. Rojas organizes the space through clearly defined chromatic planes: a horizontal band of washed blue crowns the canvas, while an ochre-gold background, worked with energetic, crisscrossing brushstrokes, carries the full atmospheric weight of the scene. Against this enveloping vibration of the ground, the slate-grey cloak functions as a heavy, dense, and grounded anchor, upon which the bare neck and the almost translucent luminosity of the face and white hair rise.
The graphic line takes on a decisive role. Dark, calligraphic contours define the features, capturing the squint of the eyes and carving out the anatomical edges with the immediacy of a sketch. Yet this is far from a mere descriptive illustration; mixed media allows the flesh tones to retain delicate transparencies, where skin breathes against the roughness of the ground, while the hair is resolved as a bold, flat white mass devoid of unnecessary modeling. That contrast between the angular line and the diffused patches lends the face a vivid, almost electric resonance.
By dispensing with the codes of industrial glamour, the portrait shifts its focus toward human presence. The piece captures a fleeting instant, a break of candid spontaneity where the celebrity steps down from her pedestal to reveal herself as vulnerable, intimate, and acutely aware of the viewer's gaze.
