Curatorial analysis

A dense mass of absolute black anchors the base of the canvas, serving as the dramatic counterweight to the entire portrait. From this dark block, austere and devoid of drapery modeling, the figure emerges with an almost instantaneous turn of the shoulders, captured mid-movement in defiance of the statuesque poise of stardom. Her sideward glance and open smile introduce an immediate freshness, disarming the customary detachment with which the cinematic myth is usually presented to the viewer.

The composition rests on a frontal dialogue between drawing and chromatic planes. José Miguel Rojas dispenses with the strident palette characteristic of pop iconography, placing the figure within an austere, stripped-down setting: a neutral, flat matte gray occupying almost the entire background, capped only by a thin, whitish horizontal band evoking a distant horizon or the starkness of a photo studio. Against this restrained atmosphere, the white hair operates as a strike of pure light, rendered through broad, direct brushstrokes that frame the face with an almost ethereal buoyancy.

The contours of the body and the facial features are delineated with visible calligraphic strokes, dark lines that retain the immediacy of a preparatory sketch. This deliberate departure from mimetic precision or slick finish lends the subject a poignant vulnerability; the flesh of the bare shoulder, painted in soft peach and blush tones, contrasts with the severity of the black garment and the neutrality of the background.

By stripping the icon of her gilded paraphernalia, the canvas offers an intimate reading of Marilyn Monroe, salvaged from media consumption and restored to a fragile human condition, quietly suspended in pictorial time.
