Curatorial analysis

A bodily curve suspended in water organizes the entire pictorial space. The female body, nude and arched with her face turned toward the surface, defies terrestrial gravity to surrender to absolute buoyancy. From above, a fractured, almost solar light penetrates the liquid's surface tension, scattering golden reflections that wash over the skin and compete with the density of oceanic shadows.

Juan Manuel Hernández establishes a contrasting interplay of matter here. While the treatment of the human figure and the bubbles displays a soft, transparent modeling, where light waves ripple across the thighs and torso through delicate glazes, the peripheral areas of the canvas reveal a rough, nearly tactile impasto. Those granular textures at the upper edges and in the blue depths not only lend vibration to the marine environment, but also anchor the scene to its status as a painting, preventing the optical illusion from becoming purely photographic.

The dynamism of the scene rests on two opposing forces. On one side, the figure draws an expansive arch, an open diagonal whose arms and legs suggest the serene release of movement; on the other, the rising cluster of bubbles traces tiny verticals that guide the gaze back toward the liquid sky. The hair, fanned out by invisible currents, reinforces the notion of dilated time.

Rather than a simple immersion scene, the title "En Libertad" finds meaning in this absence of friction: submerging becomes an act of physical detachment, where water ceases to be an asphyxiating medium to transform into a sanctuary of weightlessness and solitary contemplation.
