Curatorial analysis

Water is not merely a background upon which a body floats here, but a living, enveloping substance that redefines anatomy. In Vestida de Mar, Juan Manuel Hernández presents an immersion where the boundaries between flesh and fluid dissolve through optical refraction. Captured from a slightly shifted zenithal perspective, the female figure rests in absolute weightlessness. While her face, torso, and a single knee break the water’s surface tension, her lower limbs and arms blur beneath translucent layers of emerald green and deep turquoise, gently distorted by internal undulations.

The composition relies on a subtle diagonal that guides the viewer’s eye from the serene face, tilted upward with closed eyes, toward the leg extending into the lower-left quadrant. Around this human axis, the water organizes itself into concentric circles and luminous filaments that reverberate like cushioned shockwaves. A calculated tension exists between the stillness of the body, held in an almost static calm, and the perpetual vibration of the sea's surface, where tiny crests of white and cyan light intersect the dark density of the deep.

Hernández resolves the pictorial challenge of water through precise glazes and a rigorous handling of transparency, allowing the warm tones of the skin to dialogue with the ocean’s mineral coolness. Toward the upper and lower edges, the aquatic mass thickens into petrol blues and near-abyssal hues with subtle textural gestures, isolating the figure in a realm devoid of horizon or solid ground. The title thus takes on both a literal and poetic weight: stripped of any earthly attire, the woman is clothed and cradled by the sea itself, in an image poised between meditative withdrawal and an irrevocable surrender to the elements.
