Curatorial analysis

An overwhelming green mass governs the canvas from its base until merging with the dense whiteness of steam. At this scale of two meters wide, the vegetation does not act as a picturesque backdrop, but as a living, enveloping organism that ejects the viewer from any passive role. The gaze is instantly pushed into a trackless thicket, where botanical abundance takes on an almost tactile presence.

In the foreground, monumental leaves with jagged edges and palpable veins anchor the lower left, punctuated by an unexpected reddish glint that interrupts the foliage's hegemony. From there, a slender tree arches upward toward the zenith, guiding the eye toward intermediate planes where order dissolves into an endless succession of canopies, vines, and ferns. Water orchestrates the depth: a rushing torrent cascades through the lower right, while in the distance two vertical waterfalls pierce the forested hillside, suspended between rock and mist.

The handling of light operates through a deliberate atmospheric stratification. Damp shadows, moss greens, and dark earths executed with sharp descriptive fidelity dominate the lower zone; as the terrain climbs toward the summits, material density yields to bluish and silvery glazes. Fog filters between the mountain ridges, shrouding distances in a palpable humidity that softens contours and saturates the air with diffuse luminescence.

Madre Selva does not recreate an idealized tropical postcard, but its primordial power prior to any human intervention. Hernández envisions the landscape as a hermetic sanctuary of water, vapor, and chlorophyll, where nature's monumental scale reasserts its absolute sovereignty.
