Curatorial analysis

The panoramic format operates here as a geological window that compresses the vastness of the tropical mountain range into a continuous horizontal unfolding. The gaze inevitably enters through the lower-left foreground, where the vegetation appears with an almost tactile sharpness: the palmate leaves of the cecropias, the thicket of ferns, and the reddish gleams of the inflorescences emerge through rigorous drafting. This botanical threshold establishes a human scale before the topographic abyss, serving as an immediate anchor before the terrain drops steeply into the canyon floor.

From that point onward, space is articulated through successive mountain planes overlapping in an undulating rhythm. Toward the right, the steep hillside displays vertical ridges accentuated by luminous green and ochre tones, where the painted matter synthesizes countless tree canopies into a vibrant weave. At the bottom of the valley, a thin, winding ribbon of water hints at the presence of a river, a subtle axis guiding depth toward the most distant massifs. There is no human presence; the geography sustains itself in an equilibrium of density and suspended moisture.

The handling of light resolves the transition heralded by the title: the oil paint modulates the earthy saturation of the close foliage until transforming it into azure and grey glazes where the ridges dissolve into mist. This gradation is not merely an exercise in atmospheric perspective, but a qualitative transformation of matter. What begins as bark, fiber, and dense shadow ends up dissolving into vapor and distance, leaving the viewer before a mineral silence that seems to extend indefinitely.
