Curatorial analysis
A thermal pulse ripples through the canvas before the gaze can decipher its geography. The foreground erupts into an upright, densely woven mass of vegetation, resolved through energetic brushstrokes that surge in vertical bundles of fiery orange, calcined ochres, and dark browns. Among these stalks, sudden touches of cobalt blue and vermilion are woven in, electrifying the surface and heightening the sensation of ambient shimmer. This vegetal thicket does not function as a passive frame; it asserts a tactile, sharp presence before the viewer's eyes, materializing the dry heat that precedes the height of summer.
Behind that stirring of dry grasses, the painting opens into a mountainous topography that modulates light with a measured, expansive rhythm. The marks abandon the linear sharpness of the foreground to unfold in modeled impastos and sweeping modulations, describing successive hills covered in parched pastures, olive greens, and straw tones. The ridges and gullies of the terrain reveal the erosion across the slopes, where the interplay of highlights and shadows accentuates the geological volume of the mountain range until it reaches the highest peak, sharply silhouetted against the stillness of an open sky.
Along the lower margin, a narrow path of pale earth hints at an entry point toward the deep valley, yet its passage is immediately besieged by gnarled boughs and the proliferation of reeds and thornscrub. The dark silhouettes of bushes on the left and the slender, tall stalks on the right flank the trail, establishing a constant tension between the invitation to journey forward and the harshness of the environment. The scene foregoes pastoral gentleness: the onset of the dry season asserts itself as a stark mutation of the land, a transfiguration in which vegetation sheds its moisture to ignite into a vibrant mineral armor.
