Curatorial analysis

The exposed iron rebar rising like a row of thorns against the open sky defines the primary vertical rhythm and tension of this scene. Rather than recording a finished architectural monument, the gaze fastens onto the very core of its construction: a framework of still-rough concrete columns, half-laid red brick masonry, and an intricate lattice of wooden scaffolding where bodies challenge the heights.

The technique responds with extraordinary fluidity to the demands of the labor. Quirós modulates the transparency of the aqueous medium, contrasting broad atmospheric washes with dry, calligraphic strokes. The sky, rendered in a luminous, diaphanous pale blue wash, functions as a serene backdrop to the nervous tangle of reinforcing bars. Toward the middle ground and foreground, compact patches of terracotta, burnt sienna, and ochre supply the gravitational weight of stacked bricks and raw timber, while untouched paper reserves serve as sharp flashes of sunlight striking the edges of slabs and planks. Dense shadows in umber and violet tones hollow out the inhabitable recesses of the intermediate floor, granting the ensemble a firm three-dimensionality.

The workers do not appear as decorative motifs or through the picturesque lens of costumbrismo: they are the spatial unit of measurement and the articulators of its dynamism. Dispersed across various levels of the scaffolding, their light shirts and vibrant blue trousers in dialogue with the sky above, their postures record physical strain, climbing, and continuous hauling.

The scene captures urban transformation at its most honest moment, that instance when architecture is not yet a polished facade, but a living organism made of gravity, dust, rough timber, and human pulse.
