Curatorial analysis
An abrupt cut into the earth dominates the scene with an imposing verticality. The gaze finds no flat ground on which to rest, but rather the domesticated abyss of an active quarry, where the lines of human engineering attempt to harness geological excess.
The visual structure is articulated through a continuous tension between sweeping curves and rectilinear cuts. In the upper half, the road ascends with a sinuous curve along the edge of the precipice, guiding the eye toward the illuminated crest. Below, the platforms, railings, and support pillars introduce a rigorous geometry of diagonals and wooden beams, establishing a severe counterpoint against the sheer rock wall. This industrial scaffolding, suspending a modest building over the void, accentuates the monumental scale of the terrain and generates an almost palpable sensation of vertigo.
The handling of watercolor exploits the lightness of the medium to suggest mineral solidity. On the rock face, broad washes in grayish and violaceous tones descend freely, simulating moisture seepages and the wear of the artificial cut. Light does not bathe the whole uniformly; it emerges from pigment-free areas where the white of the paper acts as solar reverberation on the edges of slopes and rooftops. Conversely, in the lower pillars and in the shadows beneath the beams, the pigment load densifies, anchoring the material weight toward the bottom edge.
The scene transcends mere topographical recording to explore the friction between telluric force and human intervention. The quarry appears as an open yet habitable wound, a precarious working space where the fragility of planks and roofs contrasts with the blind permanence of the mountain.
